One of the most influential studies on exercise and osteoporosis is the LIFTMOR Trial (Lifting Intervention For Training Muscle and Osteoporosis Rehabilitation), conducted by researchers in Australia. The study challenged the long-held belief that people with osteoporosis should avoid lifting heavy weights.

The trial included 101 postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis who were randomly assigned to either:

  • A supervised high-intensity resistance and impact training (HiRIT) program
  • A low-intensity home exercise program

The women in the HiRIT group trained twice per week for eight months, performing exercises such as deadlifts, squats, overhead presses, and impact-loading activities under professional supervision. Training loads exceeded 85% of their one-repetition maximum, making it a true strength-training program rather than a light exercise routine.

The results were significant. Compared with the control group, participants in the high-intensity training program experienced:
