If you’ve been to physical therapy, you were likely given a home exercise program (HEP). While these exercises may seem simple, they are one of the most important parts of your recovery.
Research shows that patients who follow their HEP are far more likely to reach their goals and feel better. On the flip side, skipping exercises increases the risk of re-injury, flare-ups, and slower progress.
The key is simple: consistency. Here’s how to make it happen.
Plan Ahead:
Staying consistent starts with having a plan. If you don’t intentionally build exercises into your routine, they’re easy to skip.
By thinking ahead, you can remove common barriers before they become excuses.
- Schedule your exercises like an appointment
- Pick a consistent time each day (morning, afternoon, or evening)
- Identify obstacles like time, space, or equipment
- Work with your PT to adjust your program to fit your routine
A little planning upfront makes follow-through much easier.
Address Pain & Questions
If your exercises are uncomfortable or you’re unsure why you’re doing them, it’s going to be hard to stay consistent. Open communication with your physical therapist is essential. Exercises should challenge you, but they shouldn’t feel harmful.
- Ask for modifications if something causes pain
- Don’t push through sharp or worsening discomfort
- Understand what each exercise is targeting
- Know how your program connects to your goals
When you understand the “why,” your motivation improves.
Get Support
You’re more likely to stay consistent when someone is in your corner. Support and accountability can make a big difference, even with something as simple as a quick check-in.
- Ask a friend or family member to keep you accountable
- Share your goals with someone you trust
- Have someone ask how your exercises are going
- Use your PT as a resource for progress and guidance
Consistency is easier when you’re not doing it alone.
Use Technology
Technology can make following your program more convenient and easier to stick with.
At your appointment, you’ll be given a paper copy of your HEP. While that’s a great reference, using digital tools can make things even simpler and more accessible day-to-day.
- Use the Medbridge app to access your exercises anytime
- Scan the QR code on your handout for guided videos
- Follow step-by-step instructions to ensure proper form
- Keep everything in one place—no need to carry paper around
Having your program at your fingertips removes guesswork and keeps you moving forward.
