Jaw Pain (TMJD)

About the Injury

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) can cause jaw pain, headaches, facial discomfort, popping, clicking, difficulty speaking or chewing. It may also create referred pain in the face, neck, teeth, or ears. Physical therapy provides a safe, non-invasive approach to reducing pain, restoring movement, and improving your ability to perform daily activities comfortably.

Your physical therapist will evaluate the underlying causes of TMJD, including muscle tension, joint dysfunction, posture, stress habits like clenching or grinding, and movement imbalances in the jaw and neck. Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan is developed to address your specific symptoms and goals.

Treatment may include hands-on techniques to relax tight muscles, improve joint mobility, and reduce tension. Targeted exercises help improve jaw movement, support posture, and reduce strain on the temporomandibular joint.

Physical therapy focuses on addressing the root causes of TMJD rather than just the symptoms. Many patients experience reduced jaw pain, fewer headaches, improved movement, and greater confidence in managing symptoms. With consistent care and expert guidance, you can improve function and return to daily activities with greater comfort.

“Brand new, beautiful facility with a full gym and a small pool. We brought our daughter in for jaw pain related to her TMJ joint. I didn’t realize physical therapy could help with jaw pain until our visit. She is doing much better, with less pain. The exercises are not too complex, she understands them and can do them on her own, yet they have been very effective. Great communication and professionalism at Optimal Physical Therapy. I would highly recommend them.”
