Cupping
What is Cupping?
Myofascial Decompression (cupping) is a specialized physical therapy technique used to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support tissue healing. It is a non-invasive, evidence-informed treatment that uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying tissue.
Unlike traditional massage that applies pressure downward, cupping works by lifting the tissue, helping to reduce restrictions in muscles and connective tissue. This approach can improve blood flow, decrease muscle tension, and support more natural movement.
Your physical therapist will evaluate areas of tightness, limited mobility, and tissue dysfunction to determine if cupping is appropriate. It is then incorporated into your personalized treatment plan, alongside other therapies such as stretching, strengthening, and hands-on care.
As part of your overall physical therapy program, cupping can help reduce pain, improve range of motion, and support a more comfortable return to daily activities and exercise.

Benefits of Cupping
Faster Recovery
Increases blood flow to support healing and reduce inflammation.
Pain Reduction
Reduces trigger points and tender areas within muscles.
Improved Mobility
Releases tissue restrictions to improve movement and flexibility.
Enhanced Well-Being
Calms the nervous system and promotes overall relaxation.
What to Expect
- Your therapist will evaluate your condition to determine if cupping is appropriate
- Cups are placed on the skin to create gentle suction
- Treatment may be static (cups remain in place or combined with movement to improve flexibility)
- Cupping helps lift and separate soft tissues, increase local blood flow, and reduce muscle tension
- Therapy is often combined with hands-on treatment, stretching, and strengthening exercises
- You will be educated on what to expect during treatment, temporary skin discoloration, and post treatment recommendations
- Education supports long-term improvement, not just temporary relief
